The End of December sees the annual appearance of golden discs pastry heaven in French bakeries - the galette des rois - a frangipane-filled flaky pastry treat which marks the arrival of Epiphany.
In each one, a porcelain charm (called a fève) is hidden*. The lucky person who is served the slice containing the charm (and hopefully avoids a broken tooth) is crowned the King or Queen and wins the right to wear the crown that accompanies each galette.
