The end of December / early January sees the annual appearance in French bakeries across the country of the "galette des rois" - a frangipane-filled flaky pastry treat which marks the arrival of Epiphany.
Inside each one, a porcelain charm or trinket (called a fève) is hidden. The lucky person who is served the slice containing the charm is crowned the King or Queen and wins the right to wear the crown that accompanies each galette.
The wonderful thing about fèves is that they are the ideal size for using as ornaments in 12th scale dollhouse settings.
